An electric toothbrush, also known as a powered toothbrush, is a battery-powered device that uses vibrating or rotating bristles to clean your teeth. Electric toothbrushes are typically classified into three types, but the lines are blurring as newer models include multiple features. Here are some electric toothbrushes to consider

Best Overall: Oral-B Genius 9600 Electric Toothbrush

The Best Electric Toothbrushes of 2023, Tested by Our Editors
Oral-B Genius 9600 Electric Toothbrush

Why We Like It: The base works with any Oral-B electric toothbrush head, and replacement heads are reasonably priced.

It’s Worth Noting: If you’re not interested in features like a pressure sensor or brushing feedback, you’ll be overpaying for them.

The Oral-B Genius 9600 Electric Toothbrush ranked first overall in our test, with our tester praising how simple it was to switch between cleaning modes and how thoroughly it cleaned her entire mouth—including her tongue.

This high-tech toothbrush records your brushing habits and provides real-time feedback using Bluetooth and facial recognition technology. That way, you don’t brush too hard or for less than the recommended two minutes, which our tester appreciated.

It also includes a base, three brush heads, a sleek travel case with a USB port, and a suction base, which our tester appreciated because it kept the brush in place even on a slick countertop. Furthermore, the hard-sided travel case holds two brush heads and can charge both the brush and your phone simultaneously. We also like the color options, which include black, rose gold, orchid purple, sakura pink, and white.

Although the toothbrush is more expensive, our tester noted that it is made of high-quality materials and is well-designed. We believe that the price is justified if you intend to use all of the features and accessories (Bluetooth connectivity, six brushing modes, timers, pressure sensors, detailed feedback from the app, suction cup holder, and multi-use travel case).

Best Budget: Phylian Sonic Electric Toothbrush

Why We Like It: The Phylian not only effectively cleans food from your teeth, but it also comes with eight brush heads to save you money.

It’s Worth Noting: The vibration on this brush may be too harsh for people with sensitive teeth.

For the price, our testers found the Phylian Sonic Electric Toothbrush to be simple to use, highly functional, and effective at cleaning their teeth, all at a fraction of the cost of comparable Oral-B and Philips Sonicare options. Our tester said she could easily switch between five brushing modes: sensitive, clean, white, polish, and massage. When fully charged, the toothbrush provides 60 days of brushing between charges (a feature we’re still testing to confirm).

It also comes with eight flexible brush heads that will last you two years if you replace them every three months. Our tester liked how the built-in timer reminds you to switch sides every 30 seconds—a feature that puts it on par with even the most expensive brushes on this list.

We gave the Phylian toothbrush a 4 out of 5 in every category, but the overall quality stood out the most.

Best with Extra Brushheads: AquaSonic Vibe Series Ultra Whitening Toothbrush

Why We Like It: The eight brush heads and travel case are notable accessories.

It’s Worth Noting: The toothbrush requires charging before use.

Aquasonic Vibe Series Ultra Whitening Toothbrush – ADA Accepted Power Toothbrush - 8 Brush Heads & Travel Case – 40,000 VPM Motor & Wireless Charging - 4 Modes w Smart Timer – Satin Rose Gold

With the AquaSonic Vibe Series Ultra Whitening Toothbrush, you get the most bang for your buck. Our tester brushed their teeth for two minutes and discovered that the toothbrush was effective at cleaning their teeth even after eating sticky snacks that became stuck in the deepest corners of her teeth.

We gave this brush top marks for overall quality and value because it comes with accessories from brands like Oral-B and Philips Sonicare that are more expensive. The AquaSonic Vibe comes with eight brush heads, a stylish travel case (with storage for two brush heads), and a charging base and cord.

Our tester gave the AquaSonic Vibe a 5 out of 5 for ease of use, but a 3 for functionality. She noted that it was easy to switch from one brushing mode to another with the push of a button and that the setup was simple.

Best Budget Sonicare: Philips Sonicare 4100 Electric Toothbrush

Bàn chải điện Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100

Why We Like It: It’s easy to use, cleans teeth thoroughly, and comes with a portable charging stand.

It’s Worth Noting: Since the bristles are stiffer, this toothbrush would be best suited for people with little to no teeth sensitivity.

The Philips 4100 is the most affordable toothbrush in the Sonicare rechargeable line, and it has all of the features you need to keep your teeth clean. According to one tester, the toothbrush thoroughly cleans your teeth by pulsing and moving side to side. Our tester was also impressed by the 4100’s high-quality feel and how easy it was to use thanks to its ergonomic design.

The toothbrush received a 4 or 5 in all categories, including overall quality and value. One tester thought the price was very reasonable, especially given how portable the toothbrush was.

  • Features: Built-in timer with alerts every 30 seconds

Best for Sensitive Teeth: Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 Rechargeable Toothbrush

Why We Like It: The pressure sensor and strong vibration prevent over brushing and excessive pressure.

It’s Worth Noting: The three cleaning modes are a nice addition, but the settings can’t be changed while brushing.

We recommend the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean Toothbrush if you have sensitive teeth. The pressure sensor, which alerts you when you use too much brushing pressure, makes this toothbrush ideal for people with sensitive teeth. This feature aids in the protection of your teeth and gums.

You can also customize your brushing experience by selecting one of three modes: clean, white, or gum care, and the pulsing movements will change depending on which mode you select. One thing to keep in mind is that the modes cannot be changed while brushing.

For portability, our tester gave the brush a 3 out of 5 stars. Because the toothbrush does not come with a carrying case, it may be worthwhile to purchase one.

Best Smart Toothbrush: Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 Electric Toothbrush

Why We Like It: The Prestige 9900 syncs to an app that allows you to track your brushing habits and change settings.

It’s Worth Noting: The luxurious feel is nice but it comes with a high price tag.

When it comes to smart technology, the Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 is in a league of its own. Using sensors, the toothbrush recognizes your brushing style and alerts our tester when she is brushing too hard or scrubbing her teeth (the brush will pulse a light and vibrate once, quickly). The bristles are longer, allowing you to reach difficult-to-reach areas, and it comes with a portable leather charging case for on-the-go use.

Our tester gave the brush a 5 out of 5 because it was simple to use. Not only was it simple to turn on and begin brushing, but you can also adjust the intensity levels with the push of a button or via the app. While the app isn’t required to use the toothbrush, it does allow you to learn more about your brushing habits, experiment with brush settings, and change your brushing time.

In terms of overall quality, the Prestige 9900 has few competitors. It comes with a stylish leather travel case that can charge the toothbrush and a separate charging stand with its own cord. If color is important to you, the colors champagne, midnight, and pink are lovely. And, in a particularly nice design touch, the brush handle is seamless (which means no liquid or toothpaste mixed with saliva will get stuck in any crevices).

Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 Electric Toothbrush

The most significant disadvantage is the cost. We were disappointed that this brush only came with one brush head (especially since two replacement brush heads cost about $30 for the pair, which is definitely on the high end of what you’ll pay for replacement heads). The price tag may be worth it if you want a luxury toothbrush and will use all of the extra features (the majority of which are housed in the app).

Price at time of publication: $369

Product Details:

  • Features: Scrubbing and pressure sensors, 3 brushing intensities, 5 cleaning modes with different timers and alerts, app connectivity
  • Includes: Charging travel case, charging stand, two charge cords, 1 brush head
